2022 Hyundai Elantra Review | Hybrid, N Trims Revealed
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra checks all of the boxes. In terms of style, the Elantra is more distinctive than most in its compact car class. This is true whether it is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N, N Line, or standard model. It’s even true of the award-winning 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.
For families, this small car promises a class-above cabin spaciousness. Buyers will appreciate the latest technology, making it a ride that won’t go out of date quickly. Driver assistance systems are ready to help the driver stay out of trouble.
A broad range of powertrains allow buyers to emphasize the aspect of driving that appeals the most to them. For commuters, it offers true fuel efficiency. Yet a driving enthusiast can expect a good experience behind the wheel with any engine choice. Keep scrolling to get the details on these and other aspects of the Elantra today.
Ratings and Rankings
Kelley Blue Book has given it a “Best Buy Award” and praised it as the best small car. They too point to the low price, the warranties, and low cost to own. The editors write that the Elantra transcends the mainstream with classiness and presence. They call its appeal broad and deep.
The base package includes a remarkable array of standard tech features considering its MSRP is under $20,000. The deal is sweetened by the lengthy warranties. This Hyundai hybrid is the US News 2022 Best Hybrid and Electric Car for the Money.
US News and World Report calls it “a great compact car”. The editors give it a 9.4 out of 10 for safety. Safety ratings are 5 out of 5 from the federal NHTSA. You don’t have to wait for a Hyundai Elantra sale to get a good deal on this value-price model, starting at under $20,000 MSRP.
Exterior Style
The exterior’s unexpected and bold style really sets the Elantra apart from the crowd. There are interesting Z-shaped slashes and creative folds in the metal. The N Line adds a distinctive black finish to the grille. It benefits from additional aerodynamic changes.
The Elantra N makes a statement with a distinctive red strip running across the base of the front fascia and continuing along the sides to its valances. The front lip spoiler, rear diffuser and dual exhaust add to the sporty look.
Size, Seats and Spaciousness
When talking about a small car, the interior size is extremely important. Every extra inch really counts. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra sedan excels in this category.
Interior space is rated at 113.6 cubic feet. If you are comparing similarly sized cars such as the Honda Civic, you will find that 99 cubic feet is much more likely.
This translates into more rear legroom. The Elantra offers 38 inches, more than many crossovers. You’d expect that in a midsize sedan but not one called a compact car. Furthermore, Elantra N front seatbacks were slimmed to permit even more legroom and kneeroom.
The trunk is rated at 14.8 cubic feet, excellent for a small car. Rear seats split fold in all models, except the N where the bench folds as a single piece. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid has a 14.2 cubic-foot trunk, losing little space to its battery.
Dash Technology
The 8-inch touch screen has straightforward menus and duplicative tactile buttons for some functions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect to your smartphone. The four-speaker audio system can be upgraded to six or eight speakers.
Stepping up to the 10.2-inch touchscreen, the graphics become sharper and the responses quicker. A digital gauge cluster adds a high tech touch behind the steering wheel. Kelley Blue Book compares this dual-screen setup to a much fancier Mercedes-Benz.
The SEL trim comes with a 3-year subscription to Blue Link. This gives owners access to a remote starter, remote climate set up, SOS assistance and more. When equipped with the Hyundai Digital Key, the owner can use their Android smartphone in place of the key.
Elantra Powertrains
Kelley Blue Book praises the Elantra’s zippy day-to-day driving and its well-mannered CVT automatic transmission. Indeed the base engine delivers 147 horsepower and has good fuel efficiency.
Standard on the SE, SEL, and Limited, it earns a remarkable 33 miles per gallon in the city and 43 miles per gallon on the highway. The standard drivetrain drives the front wheels.
The hybrid model is the most impressive, writes KBB. They note that the hybrid powertrain can develop the same amount of thrust as the N Line. This model has no problems with pickup or passing. It is not a plug in hybrid, and owners won’t have to worry about vehicle range with this electric vehicle.
N Powertrains
The N Line now has its own turbo with a standard six-speed manual. This four-cylinder engine cranks out 201 horsepower. It has a more refined rear suspension and larger front brakes to assist with sportier driving maneuvers. A six-speed manual can be traded for a seven-speed dual clutch automatic.
Cranking out 276 horsepower, a 2-liter turbo is under the hood of the 2022 Elantra N. The ride is smoothed out by the N adjustable suspension and adjustable shock absorbers. Drivers can expect to carry speed into turns with so much equipment working with them.
The N has an exclusive boost button when equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. With that boost, the horsepower goes up to 286 for up to 20 seconds. This N Grin Shift ensures faster takeoffs and easier highway passing. This Elantra also has the biggest brakes, since it is the speediest.
Incredible Gas Mileage
There’s just no word for the fuel efficiency of the Elantra other than incredible. The base engine earns 33/43 in city/highway driving. The N Line earns 28/36 mpg in city/highway driving with the automatic transmission. Manual editions earn 25/34 mpg. Finally, the super-speedy Elantra N manages to earn 31 mpg (manual) or 30 mpg (automatic) on the highway.
Then there’s the hybrid with 54 mpg combined. The Hybrid Blue earns 53 miles per gallon in city driving. It earns 56 miles per gallon on the highway. The Hybrid Limited earns 49 mpg/city and 52 mpg/highway.
SE, SEL and Limited Trim Levels
Like the 2021 models, the base 2022 Elantra SE is value packed. It has a long list of driver assistance equipment and a full dash touch screen system with HD radio and essential Android/Apple connectivity.
The SEL trim adds more technologies, such as dual-zone automatic climate controls, additional dash entertainment capability, and push button start. This edition offers packages to allow buyers to customize their choice. The Convenience package adds many features standard on higher trims. The Premium package adds even more amenities, including a driver’s power chair and the Hyundai Digital Key.
Limited editions add everything in the Convenience and Premium packages. This includes additional driver assistance such as adaptive cruise control. It includes the Bose system, the Hyundai Digital Key, and the more advanced dual dash screens. In addition, this value-packed luxurious edition has leather upholstery and ambient interior lighting.
Hybrid and N Trim Levels
The Elantra Hybrid Blue is similar to the SEL trim while the Hybrid Limited is in line with the regular Limited trim. However, the Hybrid Limited has standard ventilated front row seats, a favorite amenity for Phoenix AZ drivers.
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N Line wears a handsome synthetic leather upholstery that is matched with cloth accents. It has a sunroof, heated front seats and a power driver’s chair. This high tech model also has a wireless device charger and the Hyundai Digital Key.
Hyundai Elantra N cabins are easily recognized by the lower N sport seats, N-exclusive steering wheel, and special shifter. They also have distinctive door scuff panels. A Bose audio system, the top dash screens, navigation and rear parking sensors are added to the long standards list.
Standard Driver Assistance and Safety Features
The entry level Elantra has the most critical systems to watch the front, sides and rear of this compact car. The front is monitored by a forward collision warning and pedestrian detection with a related automatic braking response. Automatic high beams turn themselves up and down at night.
The sides are watched by blind spot monitoring and a lane keeper with a lane assist. The rearview camera is paired with a rear cross traffic alert. Parents will appreciate the rear seat alert and the safe exit warning.
Higher trims pick up more parking help such as the rear collision warning and rear parking sensors. The forward collision warning adds cyclist detection and adaptive cruise control (ACC).
The most exclusive is Highway Driving Assist, standard on Limited models. This combines ACC and lane centering assist for a more automatic driving experience.
Hyundai Elantra vs Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla Hybrid
The Elantra can claim 14 cubic feet of interior space that you won’t find in the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla Hybrid. The Elantra has more legroom than these competitors, too. With more safety features than the Honda Civic, the Elantra also can claim about $1500 or more in initial savings upon purchase. Contact us if you have any questions about Hyundai Elantra sales or incentives.
It has longer warranties and more value for the money compared to either Honda or Toyota rivals. The Hyundai limited warranty is up to 5 years whereas the others cover up to 3 years. Even better, the Hyundai powertrain warranty is up to 10 years as opposed to 5 years for the other two brands.
