2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Review
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is emerging as a nameplate to beat. This Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicle is significant in many ways, including its ultra fast charging whether at home or on the go.
You could say this model is traveling the road paved by the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. Where they are fuel efficient, it doesn’t need fuel. Instead it is fully electric and allows you to completely avoid the high prices at the pump. It has an excellent standard range and is a significant player even though this is its first model year.
To get an idea of the miles of range, performance stats, and special details, scroll through this 2022 Ioniq 5 Review.
Awards and Ratings
The Ioniq name has been earning recognition since it was introduced. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has followed right along, scooping up important accolades. The Car Connection gave it the Best Car to Buy Award. Popular Science recognized the EV with a Best of What’s New Award. Car Journal named the 2022 Green SUV of the Year. Its good looks and handsome interior helped it win a Good Design Award.
As the first true Ioniq EV, the ride has been disrupting the marketplace by offering better driving range, faster charging and an exciting vehicle-to-load function. Adding to its value proposition, the compact SUV has the spaciousness one expects from a large sedan.
Size and Spaciousness
Although it isn’t the biggest Hyundai, the IONIQ 5 has the longest wheelbase of any Hyundai today. This 118-inch wheelbase combined with an overall 182-inch length allows the EV to claim interior space worthy of a big sedan.
Engineers conserved space with a cooling block that allows the battery pack to reduce its size by 10 percent. It’s also lighter, allowing it to be placed lower.
The passenger volume is 106.5 cubic feet. This exceeds the Ford Mustang Mach E by 5 cubic feet and the Volkswagen ID.4 by 6.6 cubic feet.
Second-row seats recline and slide. Back seat passengers have more legroom than you’d find in a midsize SUV. Plus, a nearly flat floor is already a big improvement over most regular rides. There’s no center hump to affect legroom.
Cargo space is rated at an ample 27.2 cubic feet. The second row can slide forward up to 5.3 inches. It also folds to expand the area to 59.3 cubic feet.
Cabin Design and Technology
A digital cluster screen greets the driver from behind the steering wheel. A unique magnetic board lets the driver post notes. On the steering column, Hyundai mounted the shift-by-wire gear shifter. It simply rotates forward or back to indicate drive or reverse.
Both the digital instrumentation screen and the 12-inch touch screen have a hoodless design. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto expand what the infotainment system can do. Drivers will appreciate the real-time route planning to ensure the vehicle gets charged on time.
Engineers made it possible to move the center console up to 5.5 inches. A driver may wish to move it out of the way when exiting. The large console is equipped with USB ports and a wireless charger.
Overhead a special vision roof really opens up the cabin. The large glass panel can allow light or block it, according to the driver’s wishes. Throughout the cabin, soft touchpoints have been created using a variety of recycled materials.
Electric Range and Performance
The driving range is one of the key stumbling blocks for many would-be EV owners. There’s no problem here. This electric SUV has a range that exceeds 300 miles with its rear-wheel drivetrain and long range battery pack. With all-wheel drive, the electric range is still a healthy 256 miles.
The single motor layout uses a rear motor to drive the rear wheels. It generates 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The dual motor system can send power to the front and rear, giving it an all-wheel drive capability. The output is 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. Clearly this powertrain provides remarkable performance for this electric ride.
Owners can expect a tow rating of 2,000 pounds. The top 0-60 mph sprint time is less than 5 seconds. Top speed is 115 miles per hour.
Battery Charging
Part of the E-GMP architecture is its flexibility. The standard battery is a 77.4 kWh pack that can be combined with the rear motor or the dual motor powertrain. Furthermore, there’s no need to get an adapter when switching between 400-V and 800-V capability.
Overnight, this means a full charge is accomplished faster. It only takes 6 hours and 43 minutes with a Level 2 charger. Even better, it only takes 18 minutes with a 350-KW charger to achieve an 80 percent charge, when starting with a 10-percent residual charge. Best of all, that same fast charger can add 68 miles of driving range in just five minutes.
For two years after purchase, owners can take advantage of unlimited 30-minute charging at Electrify America locations.
V2L Function
V2L or vehicle-to-load is an exciting function that comes with the 2022 IONIQ 5. This system lets you use the car itself to charge other devices. You can run your camping equipment or charge your electric bike or scooter. You could even help another EV owner boost its charge.
Owners will find this useful for outdoor projects. A 120-volt outlet provides up to 1.9 kW peak power. Inside the car, Limited trims have a second-row outlet for charging your laptop and other smart devices.
Athletic, Stylish Build
Using the Parametric Dynamics design philosophy, the front and rear seem to merge together at the doors. A strong C-Pillar adds to the distinctive shape.
Aerodynamics have been emphasized throughout the exterior design. In addition to the nips and tucks that make it more wind resistant, the SUV has flush door handles. This fun feature adds to the clean look of the styling. Since these handles are automatic, they give a sort of space age feel to the owner experience.
Many aspects of the Ioniq 5 were first seen on the non-production model. There are cutting edge lighting elements, known as Parametic Pixels. The distinctive lighting sets off the already eye-catching V shape of the EV’s front bumper. The design theme is echoed on the 20-inch aero-optimized alloys developed for the IONIQ 5.
Advanced Driver Assistance
As you would anticipate, this modern EV comes with lots of advanced tech to assist the driver and reduce the chances of a collision. Automatic braking is an essential component of the forward collision avoidance assist.
There’s cruise control that requires you to do the braking. Then there’s Smart Cruise Control which can do the braking on its own if you allow it to. It uses radar to keep a safe distance from leader traffic. This Stop and Go capability is enhanced by machine learning, making it a little smarter with every use.
Highway Driving Assist 2 goes even further than Smart Cruise Control. It adds technology that keeps the vehicle centered in its lane and can handle curves better than the HDA 1. It uses GPS and highway data to make the cruise control function even more efficient.
A rear cross traffic collision alert is there to watch the sides of the vehicle when the driver is in reverse. A cross-traffic collision warning essentially extends visibility and can warn the driver about approaching vehicles.
A Blind-Spot Collision Warning lets you know when traffic traveling the same direction is on your right or left. The Assist function may apply the brakes to specific wheels to address the situation. It’s also used for parallel parking maneuvers.
Advanced parking aids include a Surround View Monitor, a rear cross traffic assist braking function, and a Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist for reverse travel dangers.
There’s so much to unpack in the 2022 Ioniq 5. We encourage you to be in touch if you are interested in this exciting and spacious electric vehicle from Hyundai.
