2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz Review | Hyundai Midsize Truck
There’s a new midsize truck option, and it’s more fun than its rivals. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz combines incredible utility, truck-worthy performance, today’s best technologies, a spacious cabin, and a small footprint.
This truck is ready to save money over other midsize trucks. If you compare this premium lifestyle vehicle to the Honda Ridgeline or Jeep Gladiator, you can save about $12,000 over the initial MSRP.
This Santa Cruz review will cover the truck’s many different aspects. Scroll down to find the stats or facts that interest you most.
Athletic Build
The new truck has been singled out for its standout design. Called stylish and eye-catching, the muscular look starts with a nose dominated by an expansive grille. Sleek lines define the bed and add to the vehicle’s unique profile.
Compared to its rivals, the truck appears shorter and lower. Its stance is certainly wider and more planted. Ground clearance is 8.2 inches with all-wheel drive.
Adding essential utility, rear bumper steps have been integrated into the truck. Tailgate standards include a remote release feature, assisted open and close functions, and bed length extension.
Integrated lights contribute to a muscle car look. LEDs are used for the daytime running lights, tail lights and roof-mounted cargo light.
Clever Bed Features and Specs
Clever bed features make hauling easier. Organization is easier with storage compartments in the bed sidewalls and under the bed floor. Heavy duty D-rings are available to hold cargo in place. Owners can expect the space to easily accommodate 4 x 8 plywood planks.
The bed offers a solid 27-cubic feet of volume. Payload is 1,532 or 1,753 pounds on the SE and SEL. SEL Premium and Limited models can handle up to 1,521 pounds or 1,609, depending on the drivetrain.
The SEL Activity Package, standard on the SEL Premium, adds a factory-installed tonneau cover, T-Slot utility tracks, and the Hyundai bed rail system. This includes Dual-C channel utility tracks and cleats. Additional features include the 115V A/C power inverter and LED bed lighting.
Performance
The base inline-four engine generates 191 horsepower, controlled by an eight-speed SHIFTRONIC. A torque rate of 181 pound-feet helps get the load moving and keeps it moving. HTRAC all-wheel drive is optional on these front-wheel drive models. With trailer brakes, the top tow capacity is 3,500 pounds.
A self-leveling rear suspension is one of the most unique qualities on this Hyundai pickup. This helps the pickup driver enjoy the same solid response whether the bed is full or empty.
True driving enthusiasts are sure to step up to the SEL Premium for its “torquey” turbo. Output is 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. A dual-clutch automatic transmission makes the most out of every horse under the hood. HTRAC all-wheel drive helps this truck tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Ride Quality and Handling
Sporty handling makes this pickup a pleasure to drive. MotorTrend notes that the Santa Cruz Hyundai “drives like an anti-truck”. More like a well-sprung SUV, the pickup has thick, smooth acceleration and sharp reflexes. Instant torque with little lag is just one example of the turbo’s responsiveness. The dual-clutch automatic transmission easily copes with a loaded trailer.
For passengers, these ride qualities ensure pleasant travel with few of the downsides associated with a big pickup truck. Good noise insulation and an acoustic windshield help keep it quieter and more like the premium ride it is meant to be.
Cabin Style and Technology
One reviewer praised the cabin for its distinct future-forward look. The available digital gauge cluster and standard touch screen are part of the ergonomic cockpit. Everything essential is in easy reach.
With a remarkable 101.8 cu ft of passenger space, the 2022 Santa Cruz cabin challenges compact and subcompact SUVs. The rear seats are actually spacious enough for adults. Rear vents make it easier to stay cool.
Parents will especially appreciate the Hyundai cloth upholstery. It resists stains and odors, making it easy to keep clean. The top trim has a soft and supple leather upholstery.
The standard infotainment system includes an 8-inch color touch display and HD radio. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow users to stream favorite functions including map apps. Two front and two rear USB ports can keep smart devices charged.
Navigation is a favorite feature of the larger 10.2-inch touch screen. It can be matched to a digital instrumentation cluster. This 10.2-inch screen is a fun feature that keeps the driver informed.
Trim Levels
Packed with value, the SE has the infotainment touch screen and essential driver assistance technologies. Another high-dollar standard is the load-leveling suspension. The bed steps and bed compartments are also on board.
SEL trims treat the driver to a 8-way power chair with power lumbar support. Drivers also benefit from a remote starter, push button start and the Proximity Key. Satellite radio is added to the infotainment system. The front seats have a 3-step heat function.
On the SEL Premium, Phoenix AZ drivers will like the more advanced dual zone automatic air conditioning controls with its multi-air mode. A large digital screen behind the steering wheel keeps the driver informed. A wireless charger keeps your smartphone ready for action.
Owners have the digital key that allows your smartphone to interface with the car. This edition has a sunroof, a rear sliding glass window, and roof rails. The activity package, which includes the bed LED lights and factory-installed bed cover, is standard.
Ventilated front seats are sure to tempt Arizona drivers to choose the Santa Cruz Limited trim. The richly furnished cabin has ambient lighting and leather upholstery. Second-row passengers benefit from second-row console vents and two dedicated USB ports. The dash wears the two largest screens. Navigation with curve control is standard.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The Hyundai Forward-Avoidance Assist is on every Santa Cruz. This system combines a forward collision watch, pedestrian watch, and an emergency autobrake. A lane keeper and driver attention warning are also high-value standards.
SEL models add a blind spot collision avoidance system. Complementing the rearview camera system, there’s also a rear cross traffic collision-avoidance system. Parents will appreciate the safe exit warning and standard rear occupant alert.
Limited models add a SurroundView monitor to make parking even easier. Highway Driving Assist combines the adaptive cruise control and lane keeper.
2022 Santa Cruz vs Ford Maverick Performance and Capability
Capability and utility definitely favor the Hyundai. The midsize truck tows 3,500 or 5,000 pounds while the Maverick hybrid handles no more than 2,000 pounds and the more expensive Maverick engine handles no more than 4,000 pounds.
Payload capacity is greater, too. This is due in part to the Hyundai's tough build and its performance. It may surprise some shoppers because the Maverick bed is slightly bigger than the Santa Cruz bed. The Hyundai turbo creates 27 more horsepower and 34 more pound feet of torque to ensure that the Santa Cruz comes out ahead in any contest.
As a standard feature, the self-leveling rear suspension guarantees better operation and performance when there’s a load. This feature isn’t even offered on the Ford.
When it comes to fuel economy, the Ford Ecoboost engine and the Hyundai turbo are neck and neck. There’s little difference there to affect ownership costs.
Santa Cruz vs Ford Maverick Value and Ownership Costs
Compared to the Ford Maverick, the Santa Cruz offers more for the money. To break it down, let’s start with the package. There’s more technology, better amenities, and more capability from the get-go with the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz. Cabin size shows the Santa Cruz ahead when it comes to headroom and shoulder room.
The two cabins, side by side, would quickly reveal that the Hyundai is a nicer, higher quality product. It’s easier to keep the cabin clean, too. Hyundai upholstery is odor- and stain-resistant. This is a plus whether you are a single person on the go or have a family.
Hyundai’s midsize truck has exclusive features you won’t find on the 2022 Ford Maverick. There are standard bed steps, always a plus for loading and unloading. Furthermore, the Santa Cruz has a hidden cargo compartment that isn’t available on the Ford midsize truck.
Then there’s the five-year Limited and 10-year powertrain warranty that’s standard on the Hyundai. Ford is only offering 3-year Limited and 5-year powertrain coverage. Even better, the Santa Cruz comes with free scheduled maintenance for three years.
