2022 Hyundai Tucson Review | Hybrid, PHEV, N-Line Models
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is not the same as the outgoing 2021 model year. It has gotten bigger and more spacious. The new design is truly distinct, elevating it to a style all its own.
Appealing to more Phoenix AZ shoppers, it has gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. Technophiles will like that the whole cockpit can be completely digital. Driving enthusiasts will love the new N Line model. Budget-minded shoppers may choose one of the electric Tucsons for the excellent fuel economy.
Here’s what you should know if you are interested in this new ride.
Awards and Rankings
Car and Driver gave the new ride its Editors’ Choice Award. Likewise, the fully redesigned Hyundai SUV earned the #1 ranking among compact SUVs in US News and World Report.
Based on value and quality in the compact SUV class, the new Tucson is the 2022 Best Compact SUV for the Money. It is also the 2022 Best Compact SUV for Families. These awards were given by US News and World Report.
In addition, the 2022 Tucson Hybrid earned the top spot in hybrid SUVs at US News. They also declared it the 2022 Best Hybrid and Electric SUV for the Money. It is currently #1 in crossover SUVs and #1 in 2-row SUVs. This demonstrates that automotive journalists rate the Hyundai ahead of rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Honda CR-V Hybrid.
JD Power has given the 2022 Tucson a high reliability score of 88 out of 100. In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named this SUV as a Top Safety Pick Plus.
Spaciousness and Size
Compared to the 2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2022 models all share a long body style that is 5.8 inches longer. The wheelbase also grew by 3.4 inches.
With 108 cubic feet of passenger volume, the front row has more space, allowing taller drivers to be truly comfortable. The fully-adjustable chair and steering wheel make it possible for anyone of nearly any height to find the perfect perch.
There is more rear legroom, always a plus whether it’s your adult friends or your teenagers who are sitting back there. The new design adds three more inches for a total of 41.3 inches. Plus the two outboard back seats can recline.
More space in the cargo hold is also a welcome development. Increasing by 7 cubes, the cargo volume is 38.7 cubic feet. A dual-level cargo floor lets the owner claim up to 41 cubic feet. The total with the seats folded is 74.8 cubic feet.
Interior
Kelley Blue Book calls the new interior: elegant and stylish. Tucson interior colors are black or gray, and these vary in shade by whether the owner chooses cloth or leather. A red accent is a favorite element on the N-Line models. For vibrant hues in the cabin, there’s a multi-color ambient system. A glossy black panel hosts the touch screen.
The cabin stays cool thanks to a special multi-air ventilation system. This includes standard air vents and hidden ports. While monitoring the air quality, it uses a dust-detection sensor. Drivers can choose between a direct breeze or a more indirect one. This is a great way to stay cool in Phoenix AZ.
The ride is especially quiet since the cabin has plenty of noise insulation and an acoustic windshield.
SUV Build and Exterior Design
Following the brand’s Sensuous Sportiness approach to style, the Tucson definitely strikes a different look than the outgoing model. Designers utilized what looks like complex origami folds to alter the vehicle’s look as well as its aerodynamics. Car Connection praises the new look, calling it: a styling wake-up call.
Lightly cladded wheel wells and special cut-and-creased fenders add to the unique appearance. LED lights are so well integrated that they seem to disappear when not in use. The rear bumper has unusual diamond detailing, and the cleat-like tail lights appear to point downward.
Despite its new larger interior and longer size, the Tucson is still quite maneuverable in small spaces. The compact exterior helps it fit more parking spaces.
R
Standard FWD and AWD Performance
With its 8-speed automatic transmission, the shifts are well timed. KBB praised the transmission noting that it “always seems to find the right ratio for the situation at hand”. This means that the low-gear shifts are more potent, high-gear shifts are sharply administered, and downhill shifts help protect the brakes.
The four-cylinder engine output is 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Driving modes include Eco, Comfort, Smart and Sport. Fuel economy is excellent with 33 miles per gallon capability during highway drives. With the right equipment, the Tucson can tow up to 2,000 pounds.
Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive available on all four trims. Hyundai’s intelligent all-wheel drive system knows when it is needed. The rear wheels can receive up to 50 percent of the torque to create ample grip. If conditions are poor, drivers can tell the system to maintain the 50/50 split until they turn it off again.
R
Hybrid Powertrains and Other Options
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid driver will command 226 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. With the addition of a more powerful battery, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has an all-electric driving range of 33 miles.
With either hybrid style, a six-speed automatic transmission helps the driver feel at home with the slight variations in how hybrids respond to commands. The Hybrid and Hybrid Plug-In benefit from a special e-handling system. Essentially the Tucson electric motor assists with handling and turning.
Independent test drivers have noted that the hybrids have good ride quality just like the regular Tucson. Fuel economy is 37 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.
The Plug-in Hybrid powertrain generates 261 horsepower. The fuel economy is 80 mpge and includes 33 miles of electric range.
R
Safety and Driver Assistance
With Hyundai SmartSense, there is a good list of driver assistance aids on every model. The forward collision avoidance assist comes with pedestrian detection and an emergency autobrake. Watching the side, there is a lane keeping assist.
Many trims have a blind spot monitor and a rear cross traffic alert. Certain trims have the more advanced blind spot assist and the surround view monitor. There’s also a reverse parking collision avoidance system. Adaptive cruise control includes a stop-and-start ability.
Trims and Packages
Trim levels have changed for 2022. Designations now include SE, SEL, N-Line, XRT and Limited. The Hybrid Blue can be upgraded to the SEL Convenience and Limited. Hybrid plug-in models are offered only in Blue and Limited trim levels.
The Tucson SE has stain-resistant cloth seats, a favorite of busy parents. The cockpit has an 8-inch Bluetooth-enabled touch screen. Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are standards along with HD Radio. Exterior standards include a rear spoiler and high beam assist.
SEL standards include 8-way power adjustments to the driver’s chair and rear vents for the backseat passengers. Other standards include aero wipers, roof side rails, and a Proximity Key. This edition is eligible for a variety of extras and can be upgraded with the convenience or premium package.
N-Line, XRT and Limited Trims
With the N-Line, the cabin is sport with red accents and a black headliner. The upholstery combined black sport leather and cloth. A large 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a wireless charger are added to the dash tech. Music sounds wonderful on the Bose audio system.
N-Line style upgrades the grille, fascias and badging. The model has a hands-free smart liftgate and roof rails. You can recognize the new XRT trim by its rugged side cladding, matte black skid plates, and tough fascias. It wears 19-inch wheels on the back tires. There are roof cross rails and side steps.
Limited models wear a dark chrome grille, chrome accent mirrors, special fascias, and glass black pillars. This model has a panoramic sunroof and leather upholstery. The front seats are ventilated while both rows have power-heat capability. This edition has all of the technologies including the new blind spot camera and SurroundView camera.
Hybrid and PHEV Trim Levels
The Hybrid Blue has Hyundai SmartSense and the 8-inch touch screen infotainment system. Cabins have stain-resistant cloth upholstery on the power-adjustable driver’s chair and heated front seats. The cockpit has dual-zone automatic climate controls and push button start. The Tucson PHEV SEL edition is similar to the Blue.
With its panoramic sunroof, the Hybrid SEL Convenience is a cut above. This hybrid comes with a wireless charger and a hands-free power liftgate. All-wheel drive is standard.
Hybrid Limited models have leather ventilated front seats and a premium Bose audio system. Both rows are power-heated. This model has the largest touch screen, special ambient lighting, and a heated steering wheel.
In addition, Hyundai rewards Hybrid Limited buyers with a remote smart park assist as well as a SurroundView camera and front/rear parking sensors. The Tucson PHEV model is similarly equipped.
Hyundai Tucson Hybrid vs Rivals
Tucson Hybrids are more powerful than their rivals. That’s due to the turbo engine combined with the electric powertrain components.
The Hyundai hybrid generates an extra 95 pound feet of torque and an extra 8 horsepower compared to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Compared to the Honda CR-V, the Tucson hybrid has 15 more horsepower and more than 100 more pound-feet of torque.
Adding more value, the Hyundai passenger volume is 108.2 cubes while the RAV4 measures about 98.9 cubic feet. Furthermore, the Tucson Hybrid has 1 more inch of second-row legroom than the Honda and 4 inches more than the Toyota. It has 6 cubes more cargo space than the Honda and 1 cube more than the Toyota. The total space with seats folded is about five more than either rival.
