2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Review | Hyundai Hybrid SUV
When you want a truly spacious SUV that offers excellent performance, you need to test drive the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. There’s a lot to unpack with this model year. Some of its high points include the rugged XRT edition, luxury-level Calligraphy trim level, and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid and Santa Fe Plug In Hybrid.
This award-winning ride claims low ownership expenses, starting with its affordable pricetag. There’s much to unpack. Scroll down to the topics that interest you most.
Sante Fe Awards and National Rankings
As for midsize SUV rankings, you’ll find the 2022 Santa Fe Hybrid in the top two at Motor Trend. Car and Driver placed the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe on the Editor’s Choice List and doubled the honor by putting the 2022 model on the list. Consumer Guide named it a 2022 Best Buy midsize crossover.
These awards are about more than lush interiors and fun technologies. They also reflect the value of this SUV when compared to others. For instance, US News and World Report named it the 2022 Best SUV for the Money.
In fact, you can save about $8,000 over the cost of a similar Jeep Grand Cherokee. That’s money you can use to step up to a higher trim level or simply keep in your pocket.
Intellichoice data demonstrates that this midsize SUV keeps on saving money after purchase. Long warranty coverage is just part of the reason why Santa Fe models have low ownership costs.
Style and Value
To the surprise of many midsize SUV shoppers, the 2022 Santa Fe is just about the least expensive in its class. Yet it has a remarkable package of features.
The interior feels more expensive, and the upper trims are luxurious without costs as much as a so-called luxury ride. For those who love luxury, the Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy trim level saves money over a similarly sized luxury SUV, but it has all of the quality and amenities one expects at this level. With choices like these, you don’t have to wait for a Hyundai Santa Fe sale to get a good deal.
There are also features that are limited to the Hyundai family of manufacturers. The best is probably Remote Park Assist. Santa Fe drivers can use this feature to park the vehicle while standing on the curb.
SE, SEL and XRT Trim Levels
Shoppers can go with the Santa Fe SE and get an incredibly long list of dash technologies and driver assistance features. Quality is a cut above, making this an especially well appointed SUV.
SEL models add a wireless charger and push button start to the driver’s cockpit. The driver’s seat is a power-adjustable chair.
The Hyundai Digital Key, another unique feature, is available with the SEL Convenience package and higher editions. Locking, starting, and other functions are done through a special Hyundai app on your phone.
SEL Convenience packages also add the advanced digital instrument cluster, a favorite standard on the sporty XRT. These trim levels are all about comfort. Owners will appreciate dual-zone climate controls and special rear sunshades.
Cargo is easier to stow with a hands-free power liftgate and power-fold rear seats. In addition, the XRT model has rugged skid plates and helpful side steps.
Top Trim Levels
You can get a panoramic sunroof with the SEL Premium package or the Limited trim level. The classy cabin has rich leather upholstery. Front passengers gain a power-adjustable seat.
Ventilated seats are another standard on the Limited trim level. This model also has a heated steering wheel and power-heat capability on both rows.
At the top of the trim ladder, the Calligraphy trim wears quilted Nappa leather seats and an extra-soft eco-suede headliner. This richly appointed cabin is packed with the top technologies offered by Hyundai.
Performance
If you test drive the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, you may notice its well-weighted steering and naturally smooth ride. The model has been designed to respond quickly and evenly to the driver’s commands. An eight-speed automatic transmission ensures smoother shifts and better fuel economy.
The four-cylinder engine delivers 191 horsepower for ample acceleration in all types of situations. Fuel economy is 25 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The tow rating is 2,000 pounds.
Stepping up to the Limited and Calligraphy trims, the driver commands a 277 horsepower inline four turbo. A dual-clutch automatic transmission makes the most of the engine’s 311 pound-feet of torque. It still manages to earn 22/25 mpg city/highway, according to EPA estimates. Towing tops out at 3,500 pounds.
Hybrid and PHEV Trim Levels and Performance
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid creates 226 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The smart engine is assisted by an electric motor and hybrid battery. In city driving, it achieves 36 miles per gallon. On the highway, it earns 31 mpg.
US News and World Report ranks this as one of the top two hybrid SUVs today. It is available in Blue, SEL Premium and Limited trim models.
This is the first year for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid. It has even more capability with 261 horsepower and 224 pound-feet of torque. Electric range is 30 miles. It earns 76 mpge in combined driving. Trim levels are SEL Premium and Limited.
Parent Friendly Features
Stain-resistant cloth seats are a major plus for families. Kids make messes, and these seats are easy to keep clean.
A rear occupant alert helps ensure that caregivers check the back seat. A safe exit alert tries to reduce the chances that a kid will open the door into traffic.
Unique to this SUV, the rear quiet mode will silence the back speakers. The sound will be projected closer to the front row, helping adults enjoy their own entertainment while the kids are sleeping or on their smart devices.
Technology
Hyundai packs a lot of tech toys in the base edition. SE cockpits have the 8-inch touch screen that comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Smartphones can plug in to one of the four USB ports.
SEL trims have even more entertainment potential. SiriusXM connectivity gives you satellite radio. HD radio adds refinement to live broadcasts.
XRT models have a massive 10.25-inch screen behind the steering wheel. This digital instrumentation is the ultimate cockpit device. It is customizable and works with navigational tools and other functions to put important information where the driver can see it at a glance.
Complementing the digital instrumentation, the touch screen grows to 10.25 inches. This system adds integrated navigation and travel advice for traffic and weather.
Calligraphy trims have a head-up display that puts vital data on the windshield. The premium audio system surrounds you with 12 speakers and 630 watts of sound.
Size and Specifications
Whether they are focused on space for the family or space for their gear, Phoenix AZ drivers can get both needs met by the 2022 Santa Fe.
If you want enough room for an NBA player, Motor Trend recommends the Santa Fe with its 44.1 inches of legroom and 41.2 inches of headroom. This spacious attitude continues on the second room where passengers will find a remarkable 41.7 inches of legroom.
The hold measures 36.4 cubic feet, providing ample cargo space for gear and luggage for a family of five. In fact, it beats the Mazda CX-5 by almost six cubes and the Subaru Forester by about five cubes.
The typical Santa Fe can claim 8.2 inches of ground clearance. You could say it rises above the fray.
When it comes to Santa Fe PHEV and Hybrid models, size and volume remains the same. This allows the Santa Fe Hybrid to claim one of the largest cargo holds in an SUV hybrid.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The Hyundai midsize SUV earned a Top Safety Pick Plus. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models have earned the five-star rating from federal crash testers at the NHTSA.
Staying out of collisions is even more important. A driver attentiveness feature warns drivers when distracted or sleepy behaviors are dangerous to safe travel.
Watching for pedestrians, cyclists and slowing cars, the forward collision warning is particularly thorough. It also triggers an autobrake, depending on speed and situation. A lane departure system watches the SUV’s trajectory and works with the driver to ensure safety.
With a blind spot monitor, the vehicle watches for neighboring traffic and warns the driver when it is not safe to make a lane change. Adaptive cruise control increases how many situations where cruise control can be used safely.
The available Highway Driving Assist adds lane centering to adaptive cruise control. This system is semi-automatic with drivers resting their hands on the steering wheel and watching the road.
Parking Made Easy
A rearview camera is just the first tool in your toolbox with the Santa Fe. A rear cross traffic alert is on board to reduce rise. A rear autobrake adds more automatic assistance. Front and rear parking sensors help you cope with crowded conditions.
Limited and Calligraphy trims have a SurroundView monitor. This places a 360-degree view on the screen to ensure safe maneuvering. Using their keyfob, owners with Remote Smart Park Assist can stand aside while their Santa Fe parks itself.
Whether you are looking for the best value for your money or the most amenities you can afford, you’ll find a good fit in the 2022 Santa Fe Hybrid or standard models. Check out our inventory.
Santa Fe vs Tucson and Palisade
The Tucson SUV, completely redesigned for 2022, is ranked #1 at U.S. News and World Report.
The Santa Fe is bigger than the Tucson, but they seat the same number of people. Stepping up to the Santa Fe is about more than space, however. It’s also about getting a more lush cabin and having access to better features and top trims.
The larger Palisade seats up to 8. The Hyundai Palisade also has a #1 ranking. This is the SUV for those who need carpool space or who have a big family. Santa Fe models are less expensive than the Palisade, but they offer the same level of comfort and amenities.
With these three ranked so high and winning so many awards, you really can’t go wrong whichever Hyundai SUV you choose.
