Top 10 Ways 2023 Ioniq 5 Challenges the 2023 Mach E

This Ioniq 5 vs Mach E comparison will take a look at what’s happening with these two rivals. Is there a clear winner? You can be the final judge.

  1. Pricing

In the minds of many consumers, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq price gives the nod to the newcomer over the Ford. After all, you can save $5,000 and still get a good EV.

In fact, Ford issued some steep 2023 price increases for its popular electric SUV. Meanwhile, the Hyundai EV offers a lower price point for every rung on a similar trim ladder. You could buy the Ioniq 5 Limited trims and still save money.

Is it a good value? Kelley Blue Book has named the Ioniq 5 as a 2023 Best Buy. The Car Connection has named it as the Best Electric Car to Buy.

Is it possible this lower Ioniq 5 pricing will still allow for enough electric range, enough performance, or enough features? Let’s take a look at those and related issues.

  2. Electric Range

At first, electric vehicles could barely leave the city limits before they might run out of charge. That’s no longer true. Now it’s a matter of having at least 200 miles or more.

Ioniq 5 EVs meet that goal with 220 miles for the standard battery. Mustang Mach e meets that goal with 247 (RWD) or 224 (AWD) with the standard battery.

Hyundai extended range batteries boost driving range to 269 miles for all-wheel models. That’s almost as good as the Mach e AWD range of 290 miles. The two rear-wheel drive models are much closer with 303 miles for the Ioniq 5 and 306 miles for the Mach e.

So the question for the consumer is: how much difference will a few miles make? Is it worth any price differences? After all, those numbers are really close.

  3. Ioniq 5 vs Mach E Fuel Efficiency

And what about efficiency? Even though you’ll be using electric power instead of gasoline, you want to keep your costs as low as possible.

Well, the Ford EV is considered average while the Hyundai EV is considered above average. RWD Ioniq 5 models can get 127 or 132 miles-per-gallon-equivalent (mpge) in city driving. No Mustang Mach E battery pack comes close to those EPA estimated numbers.

  1. Charger Efficiency

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a unique 800-volt charging system. This is usually found on high-end luxury EVs. It’s the reason that the electric SUV can charge in just 6.75 hours on a typical 240-volt home charger. The Mustang Mach E takes a much more normal 11 to 12 hours to do the same.

At a roadside charger, the Ford EV may need 45 minutes to move the needle from 10 percent charge to 80 percent. By contrast, the Hyundai Ioniq EV can restore 80-percent power in about 18 minutes because it can take full advantage of DC fast charging capability.

  2. Size and Spaciousness

Here again, you’ll find that the less expensive SUV actually has the bigger passenger cabin. The Mach e is rated at 101 cubic feet specifically for passengers. The Ioniq 5 is rated for 106.5 cubes of passenger wiggle room.

As you may know, passenger volume doesn’t always tell the whole story. So here’s the most important aspect. On the rear seats, where it really matters, the Ioniq 5 passenger has half an inch of extra headroom and 1.3 inches of extra legroom.

Engineers made the Ioniq 5 bigger inside by creating a truly flat floor. This means that even the second-row, middle seat has decent legroom.

  1. Utility and Cargo Space

When it comes to utility, the Ioniq 5 Extended Range is now certified for towing 2,300 pounds with a trailer brake. Mach e models are similarly certified in Europe, but it has not been confirmed in the US.

As for ground clearance, the Hyundai is rated at 6.1 inches, slightly ahead of the Ford’s 5.7 inches.

Cargo space is somewhat similar. However, the Ford’s 29.2 cubic feet is slightly better than the Hyundai’s 27.2 cubic feet. With the seats folded, the numbers are almost the same.

Both offer V2L: the ability to use the car battery to generate power for appliances. In fact, the Ioniq 5 won a Popular Science Best of What’s New Award for this Vehicle-to-Load capability.

  2. Drivability and Performance

In order to earn top accolades from Car and Driver and from Motor Trend, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 had to demonstrate that it could please the driving enthusiast. Autoblog writes it is one of the best EVs they’ve driven. Edmunds writes it is fun to drive.

When the Ioniq 5 has just a single electric motor, that’s attached to the rear wheels. Most EVs attach the single motor to the front wheels. This difference gives the Ioniq 5 RWD much more kick when starting from scratch.

The Mach E AWD ext range model generates 346 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. By contrast, the Ioniq 5 AWD model generates slightly less horsepower and more torque. It is rated at 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque.

There’s a bigger difference with RWD models. The Mach E Select is rated at 266 horsepower. The Ioniq 5 RWD Ext Range is rated at 225 horsepower.

Still the Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE stays competitive even in busy traffic. Is it really worth spending $5,000 or more for the horsepower difference in this case?

  1. Value Packaging

Even with the price difference, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 manages to offer most of the Mach E package. This includes a driver’s power chair and dual-zone automatic climate controls. Like the Mach E, it offers a high quality leatherette on higher trims. However, if you have a young family, you will appreciate the Hyundai stain-resistant cloth upholstery, a brand exclusive.

Both brands make sure to cover the basic technologies you’d expect from an SUV today. These EVs have a large digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel. They both have a suitably large entertainment touchscreen. The infotainment system is enhanced by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

When it comes to driver assistance, the two offer comparable standard packages. You get systems to watch over the front, sides and rear. Hyundai collision avoidance also includes junction assistance.

Due to the Ioniq 5 price difference, the buyer can save money and still get the extended range battery, the advanced technologies, and the better interior appointments.

  2. Exclusive Technology

Hyundai Smart Cruise Control, which is standard, uses machine learning algorithms to improve over time. It learns from your habits and your regular routes. Similarly, this cruise control is one of the few to benefit from GPS navigation. The system can react in advance to hills, curves and other challenges.

While both the vehicles have a blind spot monitor, the Ioniq 5 offers a blind spot view monitor. This utilizes a camera to send a live feed to the rearview mirror. The special head up display can use augmented reality to better illustrate directions for the driver.

  3. Cost to Own

We’ve already remarked on the ways that the Ioniq 5 provides value while saving money at purchase. Likewise, we’ve touched on the superior fuel efficiency. Those two facts alone will make the cost to own better than a similar Mach E purchase. However, there’s more evidence that favors the Hyundai.

Ford has a 3-year bumper to bumper warranty whereas Hyundai has up to five years of coverage. Likewise, the Ford hybrid coverage ends by the 8-year mark whereas the Ioniq coverage runs for up to 10 years.

Almost like a rebate on your purchase, the Ioniq 5 comes with several years of free power at Electrify America fast chargers. The brand also provides up to three years of free scheduled maintenance.

Conclusion

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 price is simply the first point in a long list that indicates the newcomer is a better choice than the Mach E. Beyond that, the prestigious Motor Trend award is backed by positive independent reviews from many other sources.

CNET calls the Hyundai Ioniq 5 one of its favorite picks. It remarks that the EV’s performance, features and value make it particularly competitive when it comes to the Mach E.

Edmunds has written that the Ioniq 5 presents no compromises whether you want something fun to drive or something interesting to look at. They praise the fact that this exceptional EV doesn’t present a steep learning curve.
