8 important Questions about the Ioniq 6 vs Ioniq 5

The 2023 Ioniq 6 joins the Ioniq 5, taking Hyundai in a new direction toward EVs. The two may sound the same, but they are different.

The 6 is a sedan, and the 5 is a true SUV. Here’s what you need to know about their pros and cons.

  1. What are Ioniq Reviews and Rankings?

Winning World Car of the Year, the 2023 Ioniq 6 took the same crown as the 2022 Ioniq 5 had done before it. The EV sedan even won two additional awards just like the Ioniq 5. US News ranks it number one in its class. With 361 miles of driving range, this Hyundai EV proves you don’t need a Tesla model to enjoy first-rate electric power.

Motor Trend has named the 2023 Ioniq as SUV of the Year, making this Hyundai EV the first electric ride to ever win the award. Car and Driver named it to the 10Best List, and it’s ranked first by those editors as well as Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and US News and World Report.

  2. Is the Ioniq 6 Style Different from the Ioniq 5?

An Ioniq 6 is a car with a streamliner look. From the front, this Hyundai EV exudes a futuristic vibe. The back, however, is a bit more retro. The final product both promises a contemporary lifestyle and fulfills it. The style is drawn from the Hyundai prophecy concept.

Motor Trend calls the Ioniq 5 “stellar to look at”. Onlookers may be a little surprised at this SUV with its raked tailgate and lack of a D pillar. Truly unique, it offers sharp edges and a distinctive V lighting graphic. Racy elements include hash marks that decorate the wheel arches.

A true crossover, the Ioniq 5 is bigger than many rivals, including the Mustang Mach E. With the wheels pushed to corners and a longer-than-Palisade wheelbase length, the cabin is definitely roomy.

  3. Does the 6 have the Same Innovations as the Ioniq 5?

The Ioniq 5 comes with a number of smart amenities and options that are equally available on the Ioniq 6. The available heads-up display is enhanced by AI. The smart cruise control, always standard, is enhanced by machine learning on most models.

The Hyundai Digital Key allows Ioniq drivers to use their phone instead of the actual key. A vehicle-to-load charger allows owners to use their Ioniq EV to power appliances at home, on worksites or campsites.

Highway Driving Assist and Lane Change Assist go beyond the norm to give you a semi-automated driving experience like few production vehicles today. Then there’s Remote Parking Assist, a Hyundai favorite that puts the vehicle into or pulls it out of a parking space while the driver stands aside.

  1. What is in the Ioniq Cockpit?

Whether it’s the Ioniq 5 or the Ioniq 6, the dashboard presents you with two useful screens. Behind the steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital display handles gauge cluster duties. Beside the steering wheel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen handles entertainment and other duties.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are Ioniq standards that are not found on any Tesla rival. Dual-zone climate controls, push button start and an electric parking brake help ensure that this ride is fully contemporary.

A power-adjustable driver’s chair gives you a good perch. Of course, the taller Ioniq 5 has the best perch with its SUV-like height to ensure ample views. Both have carefully crafted greenhouses that help the driver and everyone else see out.

  2. What is the EV Electric Range and Performance?

Like all electric vehicles today, there are multiple powertrain choices whether you prefer the crossover or the sedan. For 2023, the most dynamic Ioniq 5 crossover is the dual-motor all-wheel drive edition producing 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft. It has a range of 266 miles.

The rear-wheel drive choices include the single-motor standard battery that produces 168 horsepower and can go for 220 miles. With a bigger battery, this choice produces an extra 5 horsepower and can go 303 miles.

The Ioniq 6 Long Range model can claim a 366-mile range. All-wheel drive models can go 270 miles with their dual electric motors and high horsepower. Available in limited quantities, a short range battery allows for 220 miles of driving with 149 horsepower.

The basic battery allows for a rate of 149 horsepower while the bigger battery raises that to 225 horsepower. Like ioniq 5 AWD, all-wheel drive models generate 320 horsepower.
  1. What are the EV Battery and Charging Issues?

The two electric Hyundais are built with an 800-volt architecture. The battery pack stretches underneath the vehicle to allow for maximum space, a low center of gravity, and a flat floor. Hyundai places the charging port up front where it can be easily reached from either side.

Even better, an ulta-fast charger is standard. Both the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 need only 18 minutes on a DC fast charger to achieve a roadworthy charge. It moves the needle from ten percent to 80 percent. Overnight charging is achieved in less time.

Ioniq 6 standard range achieves a 100 percent charge in 5 hours and 50 minutes. The higher trims achieve this in 7 hours and 10 minutes.

Meanwhile the Ioniq 5 standard battery can return to an 80 percent charge in 5 hours and 20 minutes. The long range and all-wheel drive editions achieve the same in 6 hours and 55 minutes.

  2. What Should Parents Know about Ioniq EVs?

Parents may prefer the Ioniq 5 electric SUV because it offers a larger cargo hold. Side shades are another reason to put the Ioniq SUV ahead of the sedan.

However both Ioniq SE models have stain-resistant cloth upholstery to help with quick clean-ups. Of course, both have LATCH attachments and child safety locks.

On both models, the rear seats take care of your kids by providing dedicated air vents. Teens will appreciate the standard second-row USB ports.

A Hyundai standard, not available on many rival cars yet, is the safe exit warning that helps prevent kids from stepping into traffic after the electric vehicle stops. There’s a rear passenger alert to help ensure sleeping children aren’t accidentally left behind.

  3. The family driver will like having a surround-view monitor. This available feature tries to show you everything from a bike to the family pet to a running child. It’s definitely a good asset for Moms and Dads.

  4. Does Ioniq 5 or Ioniq 6 Offer Parking Assistance?

One way both Ioniq electric vehicles help drivers is the standard parking assistance. In addition to the rearview camera, both models have reverse distance warnings. They also have a rear cross-traffic warning that includes a collision assist.

SEL models have both front and rear parking distance warnings. With the Limited, drivers get an avoidance assist for the reverse sensor. They also get a remote parking system that can park their Ioniq while the driver stands aside.

A surround view camera shows you the entire perimeter of a car. In addition, Hyundais have a safe exit alert. This standard helps keep the kids inside when it isn’t safe to exit the Ioniq due to oncoming traffic.
