2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Review -- New Electric Vehicle Explained
From electric range to dynamic drivability, this EV seems to hit the mark on every aspect of electric vehicle ownership. An ultra-contemporary style hints at the exciting technologies in the 2023 Ioniq 6.
In this 2023 Ioniq 6 review, we’ll look at how this new electric vehicle seeks to combine the best of the old with the best of what’s new. On the one hand, Hyundai has managed to bring together the best things about traditional cars. On the other hand, it has moved the needle on what is normal and desirable in automotives today.
The affordable Ioniq 6 price will definitely appeal to those who are eager to own their first EV. With a good driving range, incredible fuel efficiency, and an exciting package, this one will certainly challenge Tesla models, the Ford Mustang Mach e, and other electric SUVs.
Spacious, Contemporary Cabin
Designers and engineers worked together to construct one of the most contemporary cabins to date. The flat floor provides incredible legroom while the gently sloping roof rises to give the back row more headroom.
A digital instrument display stretches 12.3 inches behind glass it shares with the 12.3 inch infotainment screen. This high-tech cockpit empowers the driver with navigation and HERE traffic information.
Advanced voice controls are natural, responding well to driver commands. You can use your voice to command everything from the temperature to the available ambient lighting. Duplicate controls on the steering wheel put many functions at your fingertips.
Materials are eco friendly and even recycled in some cases, but you’d never know it from the way the upholstery and trim elements look and feel. There’s plenty of storage including the clever center console, spacious trunk and “frunk” compartment ahead of the cabin.
Performance
With the powertrain choices, the difference really lies with their electric motor layout. The two-wheel drive model has a single rear-wheel motor. Thus, the standard for this electric sedan is rear wheel drive, the sportiest choice.
All-wheel drive models have both front and rear motors. With an integrated drive axle, these dual motors models heighten performance and sharpen handling.
The RWD Ioniq 6 has either a 149 or 226 horsepower output. The torque rate is excellent at 258 lb-ft for both RWD models. This is instantaneous torque, ready to move the vehicle fast. With the aerodynamic build and features, this model has no problem in competitive traffic.
However, the AWD model is even more competitive and can do the 0-60 mph sprint in under 5 seconds. That’s due to its 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque.
All models are incredibly efficient. To improve both handling and battery life, Hyundai gives drivers a customizable coast-regenerative braking system. There’s a paddle shifter at hand to allow the driver to indicate whether top braking or top energy collection is most important.
The all-wheel drivetrain has a unique Disconnector Actuator System. It can disconnect either motor to optimize efficiency. This happens during deceleration, recognizing times when less power is needed overall.
Handling and Ride Quality
Built from the ground up, the new EV design reflects an emphasis on ride quality and handling. The new build has the strength, rigidity and flex to lay the groundwork for this EV’s well controlled ride. Adding to that, there are high-performance shock absorbers to handle the bumps and dips of the road.
That same build also laid the foundation for a quieter ride quality. For solid protection, there’s plenty of insulation and acoustic glass to block the noise.
An exacting response to driver’s commands is ensured through the use of well-tuned steering and balanced traction assistance. Ioniq 6 cornering, for instance, benefits from all new Electric Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control. By using braking and torque applications on different wheels, the system allows the EV to maintain speed while cornering without sacrificing safety or efficiency.
Adaptive Cruise Control and Navigation
All models have standard navigation. Even better, the Hyundai Motor Company is just about the only brand to provide navigation-enhanced adaptive cruise control. With this ACC-Curve Control, the Ioniq 6 cruise control can make the best decisions about speed. It basically looks ahead, informs the ACC about upcoming curves, and allows the ACC to adjust speed to match conditions.
In addition, the Hyundai navigation system will automatically include EV charging stations on the roads you are traveling. This allows you to decide early where you will stop when the time comes. It can even let you know if a charging station is extremely busy or out of order and will automatically search to find an alternative.
If it is cold, the owner can indicate where they will stop for charging. The 77.4 kwh battery pack will preheat itself at the perfect time to be ready for the next charge. This makes charging more efficient.
Electric Range, Fast Chargers and Fuel Efficiency
The electric range allows for long distance travel with any of the three powertrain choices. When equipped with 18-inch wheels, the standard range is 361 miles for RWD Long-range or 316 miles with AWD long range. Models with 20-inch wheels can go 270 miles (AWD) or 305 miles (RWD).
These models easily charge overnight. With BlueLink, owners can utilize an advanced battery management system to find the cheapest time to charge. On the go, they can utilize fast chargers to boost power from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes.
As for fuel efficiency, the RWD long-range model earns 140 mpge, and the AWD long-range model earns 121 mpge. With 20-inch wheels, fuel efficiency is 117 mpge (RWD) or 103 mpge (AWD). Of course, EPA estimated fuel economy and electric range will vary with driving habits and other factors.
Driver Assistance
You may be familiar with emergency autobrake systems that respond to forward collision dangers, but you haven’t seen anything quite like the latest forward collision-avoidance assist FCA from Hyundai. FCA covers pedestrians, cyclists, and certain maneuvers. It can now assist with junction turns, junction crossing, lane changes, and oncoming traffic dangers.
The blind spot monitor now has an avoidance assist as well. Then there’s the lane departure system. All of these technologies combine to keep the 2023 Ioniq 6 out of harm’s way.
Likewise, the parking distance warnings can now cover the side as well as the front and rear. The standard avoidance assist can prevent a fender bender or worse.
Semi-Autonomous Driving
We may love to drive, but it can get monotonous. That’s where Highway Driving Assist comes in. On long stretches of marked highways, it can work with Lane Centering Assist and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist to give you a semi-autonomous driving experience.
Now in its second generation, Hyundai Remote Smart Parking Assist just keeps getting better. This is the system where you can stand aside with your keyfob and watch the Ioniq 6 park itself. Now that’s progress.
