2024 Hyundai Sonata Review | N Line and Hybrid Sonata Explained
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata and 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid have more curb appeal. This new look is a big hint at the many ways these midsize sedans have changed for the new model year.
High tech toys and advanced driver assistance are emphasized, even at the entry level. All-wheel drive is now on the menu.
Car and Driver has named the 2024 Sonata as the best in its family sedan class. This is one of 7 Editors' Choice Awards earned by Hyundai this model year.
How will this ride match your needs? Get the details in this review of the sedan’s performance, trim levels, technology and style.
2024 Exterior Updates
Fresh and modern coupe-like styling is a new look unique to this sports sedan. Following contemporary Hyundai design cues, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata has a clever horizontal layout to its front end.
On either side of the new grille, wide-set headlights seem to hide until needed. A seamless daytime running lamp stretches its light from side to side of the wide hood.
Larger air intakes are a logical part of this sedan’s aerodynamic focus. Fuel efficiency is the first hallmark of this design, but the second is greater stability during high speed driving.
At the rear, a special exhaust-shaped treatment includes a unique spoiler-shaped trunk lid. The H-shaped taillights stretch the light from side to side.
The N Line, always the sportiest Sonata, has an actual rear spoiler and a dual twin-tip exhaust. It also has a bigger grille, matching bumper, and 19-inch athletic wheels.
Adding to the adventurous spirit of the 2024 Sonata N Line, Aero Matter Silver is an exclusive color that looks different depending on the light. The secret is a metallic pigment in the paint.
There are 9 exterior colors to cover different personalities and styles. Pearls come in Onyx Black, Carbon Blue, Transmission Blue, and Serenity White Other choices include Atlas White, Cream Beige, and Ultimate Red Metallic. Portofino Gray comes in matte and metallic paints.
New Drivetrain Choices
The standard engine is a 2.5-liter inline-4 or a turbo four on the 2024 Hyundai Sonata SEL Plus. Standard output is an estimated 191 horsepower, and the 180-horsepower turbo earns its status with a high rate of torque. The N-Line cranks power up to an exciting 290 horsepower.
If you look for the shift lever in the usual place, think again. Engineers helped designers free up space on the console by moving it to the steering column.
For the first time, HTRAC all-wheel drive is available for this midsize sedan. Drivers can count on HTRAC electro-hydraulic capability for fast AWD coupling.
This makes it quicker as it adjusts to road conditions or as you choose from Smart, Sport, or Snow drive modes. To help manage fuel use, this AWD system favors front-wheel drive.
Sonata N Line models have Launch Control which stores up torque to give you a super-quick takeoff. The transmission offers N Powershift and Rev Matching, adding more ways to have fun in this family sports sedan.
2024 Sonata Hybrid Changes
The 2024 Sonata Hybrid retains its powertrain combination that allows for 52 mpg combined (2023). Output is an estimated 195 horsepower. However, Hyundai is offering more ways for drivers to personalize their driving experience in this hybrid.
New for 2024, drivers can get paddle shifters for some manual driving fun. Hyundai pairs an inline-4 engine with an electric motor and hybrid battery pack. Yet it does not need to be plugged in. Front wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission are standard.
Regenerative braking is now adjustable. 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid drivers can choose different modes based on their driving habits or the current traffic conditions. This flexibility is sure to add fun to the drive.
In addition, e-Motion Drive allows them to favor battery-saving power levels or sport driving modes. Again, this provides flexibility for drivers who want to save fuel or gain extra verve for busy traffic conditions.
Driver Cockpit
A truly sporty interior fulfills the promise of the athletic exterior. Behind the special three-spoke steering wheel, there’s a digital instrument panel that seems to curve into the separate touchscreen.
The ergonomic cockpit surrounds the driver with the latest tools. Clever space saving efforts allowed designers to add a special palm rest on the center console.
Beneath the large infotainment system, a small horizontal screen assists the driver and front seat passenger with temperature controls. For radio volume and more, Hyundai retains knobs and dials to make sure you can find what you need when you need it. Duplicate controls are at your fingertips on the steering wheel.
For the first time, all models have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can use these with your iPhone or Android phone without having to plug in. The navigation touch screen brings better voice recognition to the package.
Interior Design, Color Schemes and Spaciousness
A combination of high quality materials and careful fit-and-finish make 2024 Hyundai Sonatas look more expensive than they are. Upholstery comes in leatherette, leather, or a stain-resistant fabric to assist parents. Soft touches and available ambient lighting add to an upscale atmosphere.
The usual black color scheme can be updated with a two-tone look for the new model year. This features dark gray with a contrasting beige or camel tan. It’s sporty and refined to the touch and the eye. If you add a panoramic sunroof, the cabin feels even more luxurious.
N Line models wear red stitching on the dark gray seats. The upholstery is a combination of leather and suede. The dashboard is transformed with a special cross-metal patterned trim and red-garnished vents.
Estimated cabin space is 104.4 cubic feet. This makes it bigger than the Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima. Also, you don’t lose space to the hybrid battery. That’s a big win for those who want to go green without going lean.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, and rear cross traffic alert all provide active assistance to 2024 Sonata drivers as well as the necessary warnings. The new digital gauge cluster provides you with a customized approach to where the visual warnings appear. With a head up display, important information appears in a convenient location on the windshield.
Also standard, a forward collision avoidance system works with the driver to avoid crash scenarios. It watches for stopping cars ahead, cyclists in the lane, and pedestrians wandering into the street. It can even monitor junctions, helping you make turns more safely.
Semi-automated highway driving assist combines adaptive cruise control-curve with lane follow assist. It can even make lane changes. The Remote Smart Parking Assist can do the whole job. You can even hold the key fob in your hand and watch park assist in action.
With the Sonata such a new model, it hasn’t yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However the 2023 model earned all five stars.
