2024 Hyundai Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, Tucson Plug in Hybrid Review
The 2024 Hyundai Tucson is a 2-row SUV with a fun attitude and a high quality cabin. It is joined by the 2024 Tucson Hybrid and the 2024 Tucson Plug in Hybrid.
This comprehensive review should answer your questions about the lineup, trim levels and the general differences between the Tucson, Tucson HEV and Tuscon PHEV.
We’ve got the stats and specs you need if you are comparing the Tucson with rival brands. Keep scrolling to get the scoop.
What’s New for 2024?
The 2024 Tucson Plug In Hybrid N-Line edition joins the SEL and Limited trims. This brings the excitement of the N-Line style to the exterior and interior of the PHEV model. It also means that the N-Line now has the highest horsepower available.
Continuing to improve the value proposition of its trim levels, the Tucson Hybrid will now have the largest touchscreen on all trims. This is already true for the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid. This screen is available on the gas-powered Tucson SEL Convenience and standard on the Tucson Limited.
Less exciting, but still quite important, second-row safety has been beefed up. The rear seatbelts are now as adjustable as the front seatbelts, and the seatbelt reminder now covers all positions. Even better, there are rear side airbags, adding more coverage for the vulnerable outboard positions.
Driver assistance continues to evolve. This year, a haptic steering wheel adds a new layer to the standards list. Drivers will get a pulse sensation as well as audible or visual feedback. This occurs when the blind spot monitor or lane departure alert are trying to get their attention.
Passenger Space Comparison
In both the regular Tucson and Tucson Hybrid, there’s 107 cubic feet of passenger space, guaranteeing more comfort for every seating position.
Standard Passenger Space: 107.9 cu ft
Hybrid Passenger Space: 107.9 cu ft
Front headroom/legroom: 40.1/41.4 in
Rear headroom/legroom: 38.7/40.3 in
Remarkably, the passenger volume only drops by 2 cubic feet. It has 39.5 inches of second-row legroom. Otherwise, most measurements stay the same.
PHEV Passenger Space: 105.9 cu ft
Front headroom/legroom: 40.1/41.4 in
Rear headroom/legroom: 38.7/39.5 in
Cabin Description and Amenities
Critics tend to describe the new Tucson interior as above class. A smart design has been rendered in high quality materials with great attention to fit and finish.
Speaking of comfort, the new seat design cushions the body and fights fatigue. Drivers can enjoy 8-way power-adjustable chairs, and second-row passengers have reclining seatbacks with adjustable headrests.
Anti-Fatigue Seats: All trims
Driver’s Power Chair: All trims but SE
Heated Front Seats: SEL Convenience and Above
Heated 2nd-row Seats: Limited trim level
Reclining 2nd-row Seats: All trims
Dual-zone temperature controls, rear air conditioning vents, and solar glass help you beat the heat during Phoenix AZ summers. Extensive noise insulation and an acoustic windshield allow passengers to enjoy conversation and music with less road noise.
Dual-zone Temp Controls: All trims but SE
Multi-Mode HVAC: Hybrids, Plug-in Hybrids
Rear AC Vents: All trims but SE
Ventilated Seats: Limited trim level
Driver Cockpit and Dash Technology
The 2024 Hyundai Tucson SE has an 8-inch touchscreen. This HD Radio display has its own built-in features and Bluetooth interface. It also utilizes your smartphone apps via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.SEL and higher trims add SiriusXM connectivity and second-row USB ports..
8-in Touchscreen: Tucson SE & SEL
4.2-in Driver Screen: Tucson SE & SEL, Hybrid Blue
10.25-in Touchscreen:Hybrids, Plug In Hybrids, Tucson SEL Conv & Limited
10.25-in Digital Instruments: Limited Trims, Hybrid SEL Conv
When the cockpit is fully equipped, it has two large screens. The digital instrumentation stretches some 10.25 inches behind the steering wheel. It is customizable so the driver can change certain aspects to suit their needs.
The larger touchscreen has better voice recognition and can control more SUV functions. Best of all, it has OnBoard Navigation. The HD Radio HERE system includes traffic flow and incident data.
With the dual screen, BlueLink Services are standard. This includes conveniences such as a remote starter via a 3-year complimentary subscription.
Limited models add a Bose audio system and a 3-year complimentary Bluelink Guidance Package. Other exclusive cockpit features include a surround-view monitor and a blind spot camera.
Tucson Hybrid Power vs Gas Engine Comparison
The gas-powered Tucson has plenty of horsepower and torque to get it moving and keep it going. It even has up to 2,000 pounds of towing capacity.
Standard: 187 horsepower, 177 lb-ft
Hybrid: 227 horsepower, 258 lb-ft
Plug In: 261 horsepower, 258 lb-ft
However, it’s definitely worth considering the hybrid or hybrid electric Tucsons. The 2024 Hyundai Tucson HEV boosts horsepower from 187 to 227. Likewise, it boosts torque to a rousing 258 lb-ft.
If that’s not enough horses for you, there’s still the PHEV. The 2024 Tucson Plug In Hybrid produces 261 horsepower. It has instantaneous torque, giving you quite a boost every time you touch the accelerator.
Front wheel drive is standard on gas models. HTRAC all-wheel drive is available on all three gas trims and standard on hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Ground clearance is 7.1 or 8.3 inches.
Driving Range and Fuel Efficiency Comparison
All Tucsons, whether regular, hybrid or plug-in, require regular unleaded gas, keeping your costs down. The normal gas-powered driving range is 400 miles. On the highway, it earns 32 miles per gallon. (This section contains EPA or US Department of Energy estimates.)
With its hybrid powertrain and front-wheel drivetrain, the Tucson HEV earns 38 mpg. SEL Convenience and Limited models earn 37 mpg combined. Hybrids reduce fuel costs by $2,500 or $2,750 over five years.
Standard FWD: 25/32 mpg city/highway
Hybrid Blue: 38/38 mpg
Hybrid SEL/Limited: 37/36 mpg
Standard Driving Range: 400 miles
Hybrid Driving Range: 507 mi (AWD), 521 mi(FWD)
Tucson Hybrids actually have the longest overall driving range due to a larger gas tank than the plug in hybrid. However, the plug in hybrid is the only one that can travel strictly on electric power, covering most daily commutes.
PHEV Efficiency: 35 mpg, 80 mpge
PHEV Electric Range: 33 miles
PHEV Driving range: 420 miles
The electric range is 33 miles while the overall range is 420 miles. Super efficient, the battery pack requires less than two hours to return to full charge. Even with electric costs, it reduces overall fuel costs by $4,000 over five years.
Standard and Available Driver Assistance
The price tag doesn’t matter much when it comes to the important driver aids that everyone needs on a Hyundai. The list is long and comprehensive from the inexpensive SE on up.
There’s comprehensive forward collision protection. An emergency autobrake or steering assist may help with junction turning dangers. The autobrake is ready to back up alerts about stopping traffic, pedestrians or cyclists.
An avoidance assist, generally hard to find on other brands, is standard with the blind spot system. This includes the rear cross traffic alert which has an autobrake.
To keep the vehicle within the lines, there’s a lane keeping assist. Smart cruise control and a lane following assist make good partners. A driver inattention alert is also on board.
Regardless of powertrain, Limited trims add Highway Driving Assist for semi-autonomous travel in certain situations. Cruise control adds another smart feature called curve control. This utilizes the navigation system to anticipate when to slow down slightly.
The Hyundai Remote Smart Parking Assist lets you use your keyfob and stand aside while the vehicle parks itself. A blind spot view monitor uses a camera to show what’s behind the Tucson.
This SUV earned 2024 Top Safety Pick when put through the crash testing and other requirements at the IIHS. It has a 5-star rating at the NHTSA.
Cargo and Utility Features
With 38.7 cu ft in the cargo hold, the Tucson is one of the top compact SUVs for hauling. A dual-level adjustable floor offers versatility. A remote release helps you fold the second row flat. The new space provides 74.8 cu ft of cargo area.
The Tucson Hybrid maintains this cargo volume, making it one of the leading hybrids in terms of cargo space. Although its extra equipment takes away some of that volume, the Tucson Plug in Hybrid still has a respectable 31.9 cubic feet of space.
Standard Cargo Hold: 38.7 cu ft
Standard Cargo Area: 74.8 cu ft
PHEV Cargo Hold: 31.9 cu ft
PHEV Cargo Area: 66.3 cu ft
All Tucsons have 60/40 split-back rear seats. Tucson SEL, Tucson Limited, all hybrids and all plug in hybrids have the Hyundai power liftgate. This is both hands-free and gesture-free.
60/40 Split Rear Seat: All Models
Remote Release: All Models
Hands-free Power Liftgate: All Models but SE
Dual-Level Adjustable Floor: Regular and Hybrid Models
A Reputation to Uphold
Although there is no such thing as a sure thing, the new model year holds much promise. Tucson SUVs have a reputation as high quality products, earning a spot on many critics’ lists. This includes the Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Award, which affirms its drivability among its many other qualities.
