2024 Hyundai Nexo Review
What is the 2024 Hyundai Nexo? Is it an electric vehicle? How does it work? Where is it available?
In this Nexo review, you’ll learn about fuel cell technology and how it fits into the current drive toward greener energy. You’ll also learn about where the Nexo fits in the current generation of Hyundai SUVs.
Is the Nexo an Electric Vehicle?
While the Nexo never gets a direct current, it utilizes electric motors just like an EV. The difference is that the combination of hydrogen and natural oxygen fuels the system. It is never plugged into a charger.
Held in a high pressure tank, hydrogen is stored in car’s fuel cell stack. As the hydrogen is released, it meets oxygen. The resulting chemical reaction creates energy which powers the electric motors and other electrical components of the Nexo. The only output is a little water.
Compared to an electric vehicle, it’s the power source that is different. Instead of hydrogen and a fuel cell stack, the EV uses electricity and a high-voltage battery to convert electrical energy into the power needed to move a car.
Many fleet managers are looking to the Nexo, however, for its lower price and higher driving range than many EVs. To get the same driving range, a buyer would have to invest $86,000 or more on top-of-the-line luxury EVs. That’s just not practical.
How is the Nexo Different from the Kona EV?
To understand the 2024 Nexo, it helps to compare it to the 2024 Hyundai Kona EV. After all, the Hyundai Kona EV is one of the most affordable electric vehicles in the US marketplace. It is widely available in the United States whereas the 2024 Hyundai Nexo is limited to California.
The Nexo visits a hydrogen fueling station to get fuel. The Kona EV is plugged in overnight to get a full charge. It can visit a roadside charging station to get an extra charge when it needs it.
While the only hydrogen fueling stations are in California, there are more than 143,000 electric charging ports across the US. This number just keeps growing.
Where Does Nexo Fit in the Hyundai SUV Lineup?
The Nexo is much longer than the Kona EV. However, it has nearly identical rear legroom and rear headroom. A Nexo has about 29 cubic feet in its cargo hold whereas the Kona EV has about 25 cubic feet.
From the curb, a Nexo is sized more like the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. They are about an inch apart. However, the Tucson Hybrid cabin has more headroom and more legroom for second-row passengers. Plus it has about 38 cubes in its cargo hold.
The Santa Fe Hybrid is even bigger. For 2024 it has grown to include a third row. This makes it a better green machine for families.
Our staff can tell you more about these environmentally friendly vehicles and how they compare to the Hyundai Nexo. Now that you know more, why not schedule a test drive of one of the green machines at Hyundai of Avondale?
