New Hyundai Nexo Review
The new Hyundai Nexo is a lesser known example of the automaker’s unwavering commitment to eco-friendly transportation. Certainly Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles are still a novelty, but electric vehicles themselves were the same only a decade ago.
Whereas the regular EV uses a special battery pack to store its power, the Nexo stores hydrogen in its fuel cell pack. If you are interested in a standard EV, Hyundai offers the Kona, the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and three-row Ioniq 9. It's the leading brand for affordable EVs and EV size options.
Performance
The first hurdle that EVs face is the ability to span the same distance as a regular gas engine. For this, the Hyundai Nexo offers an exceptional driving range, reaching an impressive 380 miles on a single charge. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Nexo impresses with a combined rating of 61 miles per gallon equivalent (mpge).
The second hurdle, of course, is performance. In this case, the Nexo again has no trouble. It has an electric powertrain that produces an impressive 291 lb-ft of torque, surpassing competitors like the Toyota Mirai, which offers 221 lb-ft of torque. This power is efficiently managed by a specialized automatic transmission and electrically assisted steering system.
Most EVs have a third hurdle, and that’s refueling. Even the quickest-charging electric vehicles may demand 20 minutes or more for a significant recharge. On the other hand, hydrogen fill-ups offer a remarkable advantage in terms of speed, with the Nexo requiring just five minutes to refuel with hydrogen.
Stepping up to the best-equipped Limited models, the Nexo maintains commendable figures at 57 mpge for combined driving. Plus Nexo Limited models comfortably cover 354 miles before a refuel is necessary.
Utility
The availability of Nexo models is currently confined to California due to the presence of hydrogen refueling stations primarily in California's metropolitan areas. These stations are not available in Arizona or nationwide.
For Arizona residents seeking the perfect electric vehicle, Hyundai offers a trio of choices, catering to various preferences. The new Kona EV stands as one of the most affordable electric vehicles available today. It has a 260-mile range with its long-range battery pack and rear wheel drive.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 boasts exceptional driving range and fuel efficiency, achieving an impressive 132 mpge in city driving. The Ioniq 6 and Ioniq 9 provide excellent range and efficiency for their respective classes. With these four models and the Nexo, new Hyundai EVs are extremely competitive.
Interior
For California residents, the new Hyundai Nexo is offered in two trims: Blue and Limited. Upholding Hyundai's commitment to quality, design, spaciousness, and technology, the Nexo's cabins feature automatic climate controls and dual power seats, ensuring a balance between high-tech and human-centric design.
Nexo Blue models present leatherette upholstery options in stone gray or meteor blue, with a focus on eco-friendly materials, including vegan leather and a variety of recycled materials. Dual ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and power-heated seats elevate the overall comfort and convenience, making the cargo hold easily accessible with a power liftgate.
Nexo interiors are characterized by excellent passenger volume, measuring 101 cubic feet, and competitive cargo volume at 29.6 cubic feet. Rear legroom measures a generous 38 inches, surpassing the competition in the EV class.
The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 represents a similar emphasis on passenger wiggle room and gear storage. For something bigger --yet quite fuel efficient -- the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid delivers more passenger space along with a commendable 38 cubic feet of cargo room.
Technology
Every Hyundai vehicle today is equipped with a touchscreen complete with essential connectivity tools, including Apple CarPlay for iPhone users and Android Auto for Android phone users. In the Nexo, a futuristic dashboard incorporates dual screens. The first, a 10.25-inch screen, digitizes the instrumentation and provides additional driver information. The second screen, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, coordinates entertainment, climate control, and navigation seamlessly.
To see how Hyundai technologies work, you can look at the new Ioniq 6. These Hyundai electric vehicles offers a rich selection of cutting-edge dash technologies, showcasing a dedication to keeping drivers connected while minimizing distractions.
Safety
Safety is paramount at Hyundai, evident in every vehicle produced by the company today. These vehicles are equipped with essential driver assistance systems designed to prevent collisions.
The Hyundai Nexo is equipped with forward collision warning technology, alerting drivers to potential collisions with stopping vehicles or pedestrians, and engaging emergency autobraking when necessary. Additionally, lane departure assist and a blind-spot warning system help drivers maintain their lane and avoid potential side collisions.
In all, the Nexo remains an extremely good choice, just a limited one. Arizona drivers are encouraged to check out the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Ioniq 9, and Kona EV at their Earnhardt Hyundai dealership in Avondale.
